Earlier this week I posted a shot from a photoshoot I did around the outside of Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia. I had been wanting to do a costumed shoot for a long time, and it was an absolute blast getting to do one that was pirate themed (I have a ‘thing’ for pirates). My model here is Liam, who is actually a full-time fire spinner. Yep, you read that right. The dude spins fire. For a living. (He even teaches classes, so be sure to check out his site.)
Below are some of my favorites from our shoot together. You can see all of them over on the pix|elation photography Facebook page. Interested in booking a cosplay or costumed photoshoot in the Philadelphia area? Send me a message!
I absolutely love getting to do costumed photoshoots. I wish I had more time to plan them, and more people willing to do them, because they are immensely fun. This past weekend, I finally got a chance to do such a shoot. Several months back, I had snapped this photo on my way out of an event, and didn’t get the gentleman’s name. Fortunately, we had a mutual friend who put me in touch with Liam (as I learned his name was), and I asked if he’d be up for a costumed shoot.
We ended up taking these photos around the outside of Eastern State Penitentiary. Special thanks to my friend Andy Lange, who loaned me the sword for this, and my boyfriend, Kevin, for hauling around my extra gear and weaponry. And of course, thanks to Liam for being such a good sport and driving so far just to run around with me for an hour outside a prison.
Kid photography is hard, but so utterly rewarding. Kids move around a lot and don’t always want to have their photo taken. But when it all comes together, the resulting images can make the struggle so worth while.
Pictured here as my week 18 subject is little Andrei. He was a bit shy at first, but warmed up to the camera real quick. It was a spontaneous photo shoot for us both. I only had my 35mm lens on me and no external flash, and I was taking the photos in a fairly dim conference room with only a window for some natural light. That said, I think this is one of my favorite photos from my Portrait Project thus far.
I’ll be posting more photos from our little mini-shoot later this week.
I had a really fun portrait session in Old City Philadelphia last week, and I couldn’t resist sharing my favorite shot from it. This is Rob. He’s a super nice developer here in the city. Believe it or not, this was only the second or third shot from the shoot. He nailed it right away.
I am an extremely fortunate individual. I have been blessed with a loving family and great friends; people who have my back no matter what, and will drop whatever they are doing to be by my side. One of those people is my dear friend Joanna, who together with her husband Phil, has been very good to me this year. I can never repay them for the kindness they have shown me.
The other day I went out to a softball game, and got to try my hand at a little sports photography. Portraits and events are really more my thing, and aside from taking a few shots of my kid sister’s cheerleading, I have never really done any ‘sports’ work. Let me tell you, there is an art to it. It took me a good half hour to really warm up and get into groove, and even then, I felt like I never really knew where to try and aim my camera. After all, the ball can go virtually anywhere.
I decided to focus most of my efforts on the batters. I wanted a really great ‘swinging’ shot. Fortunately, Kevin (known affectionately as ‘Hoagie’ on the team), gave me some stellar opportunities. He makes a great “I’m gonna murder this ball” face right as he’s swinging. He was nice cool to give me permission to post this photo from the game as this week’s Portrait Project shot.
I spent the past week or so back home in Orlando, visiting some friends and family. I got to check out the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter, celebrate my dad’s retirement, hang out with three cousins that I hadn’t seen in years, go to Rocky Horror with my friends, and watch my aunt get married on St. Augustine beach.
As you can imagine, picking a photo for my Portrait Project was almost impossible. However, I knew I had a very likely contender as soon as I took this one. There’s something about the way the light was coming in from the window, and the way my dad was holding my niece, and the way she was pulling on his shirt. It is just so darling. How could I not pick this one?
I’ve been dying to get in a session with my friend Tina. She is such a stunning woman, and the stars finally aligned (and the weather cooperated) this week and we made it happen! I tell you, she was a total pro. I had a hell of a time picking this week’s photo from our session. (P.S. You can find the rest on Facebook.)
This past March I had a chance to shoot a fashion show featuring Head Kandi hair extensions. In addition to photographing the runway show, I also got to step backstage and get a few shots of the models in the green room.
Thanks again to Head Kandi for the opportunity, and all the wonderful models.
I am quite lucky to have so many wonderful friends willing to aid me in my Portrait Project. This week, when someone I lined up had to reschedule, my girl Aidan was totally willing to step in.
Originally we had tried something a bit different, but ultimately I wasn’t happy with the way the lighting worked, so I went a bit more traditional. I may try it again in the future though, we’ll see. That said, I am super happy with how this portrait turned out. Aidan is totally adorable, and I think I captured that here.
