Behind the Scenes: The Slushie Photo

Hello pix|elation fans! I’m Kevin, and I’ve been assisting Kelly Rowles with some of her Portrait Project shoots. (You may recognize me as the subject from week 4!) I helped with this week’s photoshoot, and Kelly asked me to write a post describing our different attempts at this. The shoot was inspired by the torture that the kids on the television show ‘Glee’ endure, as popular jocks dump the freezing icy beverages on them in the school hallways.

We had 4 slushies in total. (We came very prepared, and hoping that our primary subject, Chelcie, would be very tolerant!) The first attempt was our orange flavor, being a test to make sure we had the range and force of the toss correct. Ryan was our thrower, and he nailed my fist dead-on! It had a great impact, and I think it was the biggest explosion from contact we got. (I believe Ryan threw a bit harder than he did when he was shooting at a live target – he probably didn’t want to hurl a slushie at his wife’s face full-force.) This throw seemed to have the most cohesive ball o’ slushie upon impact, and I definitely felt the heavy wet slop when it hit.

After a successful test, we moved to the main event and pulled out a blue slushie for Chelcie. Ryan’s aim was perfect yet again, and unleashed a stream of cerulean goo right at his sporting wife. Since I think the toss was a bit softer, there is a bit more slushie spray filling the air as it flew in every direction upon release – but there is no question that main body of that beverage caught Chelcie full in the face. The impact didn’t seem to stun her as much as the shock of cold did, and her first conscious reaction after the hit was a shudder from the sudden cool sting.

Chelcie toweled off a bit, and then she said she was ready for another go! We pulled out our two remaining slushies and stirred them up a bit to get an even mix of the juice and the icy slush. The first two had been sitting out for a few minutes while we set up the shot, so they had time to thaw just enough for form a nice snowball consistency. These last two were a little more fluid and didn’t fly in the same tidy fashion, but we got solid hits nonetheless. Chelcie caught her second blue slushie across her mouth and down her front.

Since turnabout is fair play, Ryan volunteered to take our final slushie throw and give his wife a chance for some revenge. He suited up and struck a pose worthy of this endeavor, then prepared to take the classically red slushie to the face. He assumed a beautiful wince of terror as we finished the launch countdown, still visible on his face as the drink makes a wide slash across his torso. Like the previous throw, this one had a very liquid consistency and Chelcie made a broad scoop that hit from his shoulder up to his chin. The follow-up picture a few seconds later, as the slushie ceased its forward movement into Ryan and began to collect and stream down off of him, features another great expression. Ryan is very clearly feeling Chelcie’s pain as the cold sinks in and a little gasp sneaks past his barely parted lips.

Not sure how this is going to be topped.
